Although Etta Jones (1928-2001) never became a household name, she achieved a certain degree of success as a jazz vocalist. She performed with the Earl Hines sextet from 1949-1952 and during her lifetime received three Grammy nominations, one of them for her 1960 LP Don't Go to Strangers, featuring Frank Wess and Roy Haynes, This LP made Jones an overnight sensation when the title tune went gold, hitting the Top 40 on the Billboard pop charts and reaching number five on the R&B charts.
