Kicking our sunny round-up off this week is Caoilfhionn Rose, whose album Constellation shines brightly with a much-needed soothing presence in these uncertain times. True Story is the latest release from Malcolm Jiyane, a South African trombonist deeply engaged in the sociopolitical circumstances of the world he inhabits. Pianist and Steinway artist Richard Fairhurst leads his exceptional trio on Inside Out, blending original compositions with two Carla Bley covers, while Johnny Griffin delivers a stellar performance at Live in Valencia 92. Finally, trombonist Conrad Herwig assembles a formidable lineup of Latin jazz luminaries for The Latin Side of McCoy Tyner, featuring the incomparable Eddie Palmieri.

Caoilfhionn Rose

We've not stopped listening to the new release from this Manchester-based singer-songwriter since it came out last month. Caoilfhionn (pronounced ‘kee-lin’) initially connected with Gondwana Records founder Matthew Halsall after receiving a CD copy of his album Fletcher Moss Park (2012). The label boss subsequently attended one of her performances, sparking a collaboration that has continued ever since. On her latest album, Rose forges a gentle yet immersive universe of jazz-infused psychedelia, anchored by her comforting vocals and introspective lyrics.

Malcolm Jiyane Tree-O

Moving on, this release has most recently been touted as The Guardian’s ‘Global Album of the Month’. The South African trombonist and composer forms a crucial part of the Jo’burg-based collective known as SPAZA, and leaves no room for doubt that the second album under his own name is just as politically charged as his wider oeuvre. Overflowing with impassioned melodies and danceable rhythmic feats, this irresistible showcase of studio creativity is projected onto a vivid backdrop of social unrest and discontent. It's music that pushes boundaries, boldly embracing its traditional Afro jazz roots.

Richard Fairhurst

Described as ‘one of the UK’s most innovative pianists’, the former leader of Hungry Ants presents his latest album featuring longtime collaborators Dave Whitford on bass and drummer Tim Giles. This trio, whose musical bond spans over two decades, gracefully navigates the intricacies of Fairhurst’s compositions with a delightful sense of camaraderie. Their rapport shines through as they tackle two Carla Bley covers, paying homage to the late composer and bandleader by revitalising her distinctive humor with every phrase. From beginning to end, it's a spellbinding journey of pure musical magic.

Johnny Griffin

It’s always a pleasure to discover previously unreleased material from the Little Giant, especially on such a pristine live recording. A trailblazer of the hard bop era, it’s remarkable to think that Griffin's career began in 1945 as part of Lionel Hampton’s big band, and continued unabated until his sudden death from a heart attack in 2008. After moving to France in 1963 and later to the Netherlands in 1978, Griff's deep connection with his European surroundings is immediately made clear, underscored by an enthusiastic audience. The charismatic saxophonist's warmth and universal appeal simply burst through the speakers.

“Perhaps it is possible,” says arts writer and Latin music expert Fernando González, “to Latinize or, if you prefer, Afro-Cuban-ize any piece of music. Decide on the most fitting clave, choose the genre, tweak the instrumentation, and off you go.” This assertion holds true in the case of New York-based jazz trombonist and four-time Grammy nominee Conrad Herwig, as demonstrated on his latest accomplished recording. The musician skillfully reimagines the most beloved compositions of his idol (and former collaborator), incorporating styles ranging from sultry rumba and bolero to energetic mambo, accompanied by an all-star band. Notably, he collaborates with the renowned Eddie Palmieri, affectionately known as 'the sun king of Latin jazz'.
