New Release Round-up, Jazz New Release Round-Up - 14th June 2024

Cassie Kinoshi's SEED Ensemble

This week's selection reaches an altogether higher plane beginning with gratitude, the remarkable new collaboration between Cassie Kinoshi's seed. and the London Contemporary Orchestra. Next up, saxophonist David Murray leads a juicy quartet on Francesca, whilst composer and vocalist Caroline Shaw teams up with Sō Percussion to build her own eclectic musical world on Rectangles & Circumstances. Renowned Tel Aviv-based trumpeter Sefi Zisling's The Librarian is a delightful throwback to the fusion sounds of seventies jazz-funk, before we're taken on a riveting adventure courtesy of drummer Stéphane Galland & The Rhythm Hunters

Cassie Kinoshi's seed.

Born out of the London jazz scene, this important and reflective group released their Mercury-nominated album Driftglass in 2019. Since then, its leader has spent more than enough time putting the work in as a composer at the forefront of the boundaries between classical and urban contemporary music. Kinoshi’s latest collaboration with the London Contemporary Orchestra and turntablist NikkNak affirms her status as one of the leading lights in the new wave of British jazz, without a doubt.

David Murray Quartet

This American jazz saxophonist, who performs mostly on tenor and bass clarinet, has recorded prolifically for many different record labels since the mid-seventies. Belonging to the Archie Shepp school of continuous reinvention in terms of persona and style, this ensuing album sees him call together a brand new and distinctly fresh quartet starring Luke Stewart – the brilliant Irreversible Entanglements’ bassist who also featured in last week’s Round-Up.

Available Format: CD

Caroline Shaw & Sō Percussion

The complex and layered sound world of the ‘Partita for 8 Voices’ composer is refracted through a lens of minimalist songwriting, matched by the intricate rhythms of the leading New York percussion quartet. Chamber music that speaks to our times, carrying on in the tradition of Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass and David Byrne.

Sefi Zisling

Brimming with warm nostalgia, this latest release from the Israeli trumpeter sees him shine a light on his familiar influences of psychedelic funk, soul and spiritual jazz. Infectious energy that comes over like an irresistible soundtrack to a long hot summer night.

Available Format: Vinyl Record

It's great to hear a bit of 'batterie belgique'... In light of his undertaking a PhD on cultural roots and interactions of contemporary rhythms in jazz, Galland's latest project integrates rhythmic principles from his travels to different parts of the world into a personal musical language.
