As May draws to a close, here are some of the finest recordings this month has had to offer! Luke Stewart's Silt Trio presents Unknown River, the first recoridng made under the American double bassist's own name. On Twain Walking, trombonist Lis Wessberg scales new sonic ground, whilst Tim Garland brings his Lighthouse Trio back together with the help of some very special guests on Moment of Departure. Swedish pianist Adam Forkelid shows two different sides of himself with his new album Turning Point and Gavia, the new album from Sonic Skin that remarkably combines players of different generations. Finally, we encounter the brotherly musings of the Joost Zoeteman & Paulus Schäfer Quartet on Fratellanza, who blissfully lead us into summertime with some refreshing and up-to-date gypsy jazz. What's not to love?

Luke Stewart

A fiery pairing of chordless trio engagements featuring two separate drummers, this debut album from the Irreversible Entanglements bassist is definitely worth your attention. Stewart, who has spent recent years fostering talent as a DJ and promoter in his local Washington D.C. community, calls on his long-running lineup for a blistering series of locked-in jams and improvised grooves. Whilst it’s the Silt Trio’s third release to date, it marks the first recording to be released under the musician’s own name – a responsibility he bears with a punchy attitude of distinction.

Lis Wessberg

This Danish musician first impressed us with her debut Yellow Map in 2021, but her extraordinary career stretches back even further. As one of her country’s leading trombonists, Wessberg’s jazztronica flavours and atmospheric sounds are truly genre-defying. Twain Walking carries a uniquely imaginative vibe that'll leave you floating on air, from this talented player who dares to dream big.

Tim Garland

If you were in London this week, you may have been lucky enough to witness the King's Place launch of this leading UK saxophonist's new double album. Three years in the making, the Chick Corea collaborator – who guested on Simon Lasky’s For The Dreamers in recent weeks – revives his spectacular Lighthouse Trio, along with the help of dexterous drummer Asaf Sirkis and the masterful Gwilym Simcock on keys. This plentiful release also employs the talents of trumpeter Yazz Ahmed, violinist Thomas Gould and the strings of the Britten Sinfonia! Fitting stuff, all in time for the band’s anniversary celebrating two decades in the biz.

Adam Forkelid

Based in Stockholm, the latest album from this authoritative Swedish pianist was turned around in a single day. Aiming to capture the fleeting emotions its compositions convey, the recording is grounded in its laid-back sense of control. The performers retain a clear idea of where they’re heading without ever feeling the need to dominate the musical conversation. Adam is also a member of the Svante Söderqvist Trio, who have received much love from us in the past, whilst a big shout out must go to guitarist Carl Mörner Ringström, who absolutely shines here.

Sonic Skin

Forkelid sits in on this meeting between masters and students. Professorial trombonist Sven Berggren and guitarist Håkan Goohde – both teachers at Stockholm’s Royal College of Music – meet their match in the scholarly pairing of bassist Johannes Bäckström and drummer Henrik Jäderberg. Whilst the mood is mostly dark and opaque (for more, see ‘Scandinavian jazz’), there's still plenty of energy summoning the band down quirkier, mpre intriguing paths - especially once bass clarinettist Alberto Pinton enters the fray!

Joost Zoeteman & Paulus Schäfer Quartet

Our final recording is an album of contemporary Gypsy jazz by way of Holland… These two duelling guitarists owe a lot to Django Reinhardt, even going as far as to dedicate their last album to the famous Romani musician. Meanwhile, their latest release is a sweltering riposo of virtuosity and technique, poured into an hearty and enjoyable Italian-inspired setlist. Much more than a band of Hot Club copycats, Zoeteman, Schäfer and co. have catapulted the genre into new domains.
