The Wölfli-Kantata, a large scale-scale work for a cappella choir and soloists, is the creation of a composer who has been deeply involved with the composition of vocal works for more than 30 years. It arose from Aperghis’ encounter with the pictures and text of Adolf Wölfli , native of Bern who was a permanent inmate of a mental institution and became an icon of art brut in the early 20th century. An initial 12 minute piece, Petrrohl, was composed in 2001 with the remaining pieces coming to fruition in 2005.
