24th April 2009 marks the jubilee of one of the rare concerts given in Moscow by Yevgeny Mravinsky with 'his' Leningrad Philharmonic.The 'Unfinished' is worthy of comparison with Furtwangler's recordings in Berlin (1950) and Vienna (1951). In Tchaikovsky, the most implacable vision of the 4th Symphony, in his repertoire as of 1938, comes back to life. One is unsure of witnessing a funeral ritual or rite of sacrifice.

Here, it is the Fourth, in a performance of astonishing brilliance and grandeur, but also of darkness, of Shostakovich-like grimness and even, in the tone and attack of the woodwind, grotesqueness. The first movement of the Schubert is, again, awesome in its tragic force.
