Elizabeth DeShong

Elizabeth DeShong

American mezzo Elizabeth DeShong originally intended a career as a pianist, before studying voice at Oberlin College; she is in particular demand for bel canto roles including Bellini’s Adalgisa, Donizetti’s Orsini (Lucrezia Borgia), and Rossini’s Rosina, Cenerentola, Arsace ( Semiramide) and Calbo (Maometto II).

DeShong’s discography includes Suzuki on two different productions of Madama Butterfly on DVD/Blu-ray, Messiah with Sir Andrew Davis and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Lucrezia Borgia with Renée Fleming in the title-role, and Hermia in the Shakespeare-inspired baroque pasticcio The Enchanted Island from the Metropolitan Opera, conducted by William Christie and also starring Joyce DiDonato and Plácido Domingo.

This weird and wonderful opera about a Flanders innkeeper who is radicalised into religious extremism really catches fire on a live recording from last year's Aix-en-Provence Festival, with the London Symphony Orchestra on barnstorming form and American tenor John Osborn at the top of his game in the demanding title-role.

Recording of the Week, Handel's Alcina from Marc Minkowski

Magdalena Kožená is at the height of her powers as a vocal actress in the title-role, with peerless performances from Anna Bonitatibus, Erin Morley and Elizabeth DeShong as Ruggiero, Morgana and Bradamante respectively.
